Harper's birth story

Meg and I went into the hospital on Tuesday, April 1st to start the induction process. They inserted the cervadril same as they did with Avery. They came in around 7:30 the next morning. They took out the cervadril and broke Meg's water. She was about 3cm dilated at that point. 

Harper's heart rate was a little elevated and erratic. They gave Meg some IV fluids and waited for Harper to calm down before starting the pitocin.

Avery came to visit while all of this was taking place. She took a cat nap on me. 

My mom took Avery down to the cafeteria when Meg got her epidural. I don't know if you remember but the epidural process last time was a horrible experience. It took over 45 minutes. Meg kept screaming in pain because they continuously hit a nerve-apparently there were faulty kits. Fortunately, this experience was much different and relatively pain free. The whole thing took less than 15 minutes.

Back to the good stuff, Meg was 6cm shortly after Avery came back from the cafeteria. Within 45 minutes she was pushing. 

Ready for the really fun part? Meg went into labor so fast that the nurses weren't prepared and the doctor was not even in the hospital. 

Meg started nervously crying. She kept saying that she could feel Harper's head. She kept saying that she had to push. Everyone was running around trying to get ready that they couldn't assist her. Megan's mom grabbed her one hand and I grabbed the other. I tried to calm her down but watching them put a baby slip and slide under Meg's butt was terrifying. 

At the very last second, the house Ob ran in. She rushed to get her booties and gloves on. Hearing her voice and seeing her face gave Meg and I instant relief. It was our favorite doctor from our previous OB gyn practice (we had to switch because their hours weren't convenient this time around)

Meg's epidural didn't work as planned because she could feel pain and a burning feeling that I'll never understand. 

When they plopped Harper on her chest and we listened to her cry a huge sigh of relief was let out by everyone in the room.

Avery even cried in the hallway. (Because she heard Harper crying)

It was a very stressful 45 minutes, but it makes for a good story. (Megan's total labor time was around 3 hours)

Combating gas

Hmm..where do I even begin? Avery has been a great baby from the very first day she was born. So great that she pretty much slept through everything in the hospital (including her hearing test, doctor check up, and some of her hospital photoshoot) When we brought her home it was more of the same. She was a typical sleepy newborn. She rarely cried and was rather predictable. Her only problem was gas. By the time Avery was 2 weeks old, we had switched her to Enfamil Gentlease. It seemed to work better than the Enfamil newborn, but Avery still suffers from gas on occasion.  We tried adding gripe water into her bottles. This caused Avery to develop a rash all over her body (which ultimately made her more uncomfortable). Our most recent attempt revolved around Little Tummies. While the drops do seem to calm her, they only work temporarily. Oh, and Avery despises the taste of them (despite their "berry flavor"). Seriously, I'm waiting for her to foam at the mouth one day!

One Week Later...

It has been 7 days since the birth of our beautiful little girl and I've already learned so much...Here are the highlights so far... 1. I've learned how to change a wet diaper. 2. Keeping with number 1, I've learned that if I don't change Avery's diaper fast enough or if I try to change her before she fully wakes up Avery will pee on me! (definitely not just a boy thing!) 3. I've learned how to change a poopy diaper. 4. Keeping with number 3, I've learned that Avery can (and will) projectile poop if I don't change her diaper fast enough (happened twice so far!) 5. I've learned how to swaddle Avery (Meg is still much better at this than I am!) 6. I've learned how to make a bottle. 7. I've learned how to burp Avery..I'm kind of an expert! 8. I've learned how to tell when Avery is hungry (she does this weird thing with her tongue...Meg calls it rooting...I call it "Barney Crouch-ing"...after the guy in Harry Pot

First Visit to the Pediatrician

Avery had her first doctor's appointment today. She did well. She didn't gain any weight, but she didn't lose any either (still 6lbs 10 oz). The doctor told us that she looked great. He said that her "Angel's kiss" (pink mark above her eye) will continue to fade. He also pointed out her "Stork bite" (it's a red mark...kind of looks like a rash...on the back of her neck) and said that too will fade with time. We weren't worried...we didn't even know it existed (it's covered by her hair!) I think Meg and I were more phased by the appointment than her. She had a wet diaper and they suggested we change her on the community changing table. They had the paper roll to cover the table, but all we could think of was GERMS! Then, there was a little girl who walked way too close and coughed (yuck!) Needless to say, when we got home we took off all of our clothes (and Avery's) and washed all of our hands.
